Goodwill Launches Annual Appeal

January 1, 2006

Goodwill Industries of the Springfield/Hartford Area, Inc. is currently requesting donations of gently used clothing, toys and household items. Donations from families and individuals in our community will help Goodwill Industries reach their Annual Appeal goal of collecting 100,000 pounds of donated goods by the end of the year. This will translate into $50,000 when those donations are sold in one of Goodwill's local retail stores. Goodwill will also accept financial donations. Donations can be made at any of the Goodwill retail stores or through the Donation Drives currently scheduled. Goodwill retail stores are open daily and located in Springfield, Chicopee, Palmer and Ware. There will be a Donation Drive at Whole Foods Market in Hadley on Sunday, December 10th from 9am to 4pm. There will be also be a Donation Drive at the Holyoke Mall on Sunday, December 17th from 9am to 4pm.

Goodwill store locations and details on the Annual Appeal can be found at www.ourgoodwill.org. Financial donations can be also be made online. All financial contributions and donations of goods are tax-deductible for 2006 if made before the end of the year. Community donations of clothing or other household items begin the cycle of helping Goodwill prepare people for the workforce. Donated goods provide a means for individuals to gain valuable work experience through the process of sorting and preparing items for sale. These gently used goods supply the inventory for Goodwill's five local retail stores which provide a valuable community service to those seeking good value for their shopping dollar. Since 1902, Goodwill has been collecting and reselling goods in order to fund job training and career services.

Goodwill provides services to individuals with a variety of disadvantaging or disabling conditions. Many of them are in need of assistance in securing a job, others need support so they can stay with their families, and still others need assistance so they can live as independently as possible. The individuals who come to Goodwill are trained to work, and then give back to our community. Goodwill provides an in-house workforce at work centers in Springfield and Hartford, handling production contracts for area businesses. Goodwill also creates on-site work crews that are hired to help area businesses on an ongoing basis. Goodwill's mission is to provide services to individuals, families and communities, including people with disabilities. Goodwill seeks to eliminate barriers to opportunities and foster self-determination in order to improve the quality and dignity of life and full participation in the community.
