Glastonbury Public schools:

"Glastonbury Public schools School Food Service Department (SFSD) has been partnering with Goodwill Industries of Hartford/Springfield since September of 2004. Goodwill Industries provided a crew of six workers and two supervisors who assumed dishware washing duties at the GHS and SMS cafeterias. SFSD in turn pays Goodwill the equivalent of the hourly rate for two full time employees. This has saved SFSD the cost of any fringe benefits and any other employee related expenses including workers compensation, FICA and Unemployment tax. During the summer of 2004 a small team of workers and a supervisor assisted in custodial work in several GPS buildings.

This has truly been a win/win partnership as the workers are happy to report to work and have expanded their responsibilities to include some food preparation and storeroom work. SFSD employees are able to dedicate their time to food preparation and service knowing that the laborious dishware washing duties are handled by the Goodwill team.

While technically the clients are outside contractors, they have been adopted as co-workers by the SFSD.
